I'm trying to compress a file and the program I am using will be taking up a lot of memory. I was just wondering which processes I wouldnt need so I could free some memory, or is there some other way besides buying a new memory stick?

Here are a couple of tips.

For Windows ME and Windows XP, use RUN then MSCONFIG. Turn off any unused programs at startup. But make sure that your Anti-virus is still functional.

Go to the Control Panel, and UNINSTALL stuff that you do not use, through the ADD/REMOVE section.

Then go to the Program section - - ACCESSORIES - - System Tools and run Disk Cleanup. Pick everything.

Then get rid of any spyware. Go to www.Download.com and get these two programs:

SpyBot Search & Destroy
Ad-aware

Both of these will search out and delete anything that is bad. Anything that they find, you can use these programs to DELETE and/or FIX.

If you are running Windows XP, I recommend that you consider MORE memory. Hopefully, you have 500MB. (Windows 98 should have 128MB) Check the prices from your vendor, then check http://www.CoastMemory.com They absolutely guarantee success and happily accept returns help to make it right.

When was the last time you did a disk cleanup?

Start > programs > accessories > system tools > disk cleanup.
Put a check mark by everything and run it. it might take a while depending on when it was last done so be patient.

press ctrl shift esc, and go to processes. find all the ones you dont need, and close them. also go to start, run, and type in msconfig, and click on start up programs. unclick all the ones you dont need.
