Right click on your desk top
Highlight Arrange Icons by:until additional choices pop up to the right
Left click "show desktop icons"
Your Icons will be back

Right-click on your desktop, when the grey menu box comes up, navigate through "Arrange icons by" section, simply click "Show desktop icons".

right click on your desktop and scroll down to arrange icons then make sure the desktop icons is checked

XP: right click on the desktop & check "Show Desktop Icons".
Win2000: right click on the desktop & un-check "Show Web Content".
