Since I have done both (I was in Germany from June 10th until June 19th), I would definitely say I would rather be there live. Nothing beats the atmosphere before, during, and after a live World Cup game.
Watching on TV really sucks. HDTV helps, but I cannot stand the commentators. Sometimes I have to use my mute button.
