You have missed the summer festival..when there are many cultural events :-(( That ends on the second of september...
Ptuj is a small town..and I think there is unlikely to be many events in September...I had a search and the only thing I could find is a fell race on 29 sep...
Ptuj is a very beautiful fairy tale like town..And I suggest visiting the castle..And the thermal spa near by..If it gets cooler on an evening The Hotel Mitra does a hot white chocolate to die for :-))))
Maribor is not far, and I suggest you could visit there as well.. They usually have a festival of chamber music in September...but this year it does not seem to be happening...

Slovenia is a small country..and it easy to travel to it's capital Ljubljana where there will be many things going on...
It is not difficult to travel to Zagreb from Ptuj...and there is a World Theatre Festival, and an Urban festival taking place there..around the times you plan to be in Ptuj...
