It is the color of the National Team, called "Azzurri".
It's an historical tradition, before the creation of the Italian Republic, the Italian Regal Family (Savoia) had color "azzurro" (blue) in their flag and that color was adopted by the soccer National Team to respect the Regal tradition.
Since then the color has been kept in the Italian shirt.Even thought it's not a color on our flag!!

FORZA AZZURRI!!

AZZURRO means light blue...Originally the shirt of the italian team was white and with this shirt, the team played the first 2 matches..Than the blue shirt (azzurra) comes on the 6th january 1911 for the 3rd italian match..the blue/light blue=azzurro was chosen because it represents the Savoia's flag colour. Since that moment the italian shirt was AZZURRA!
