Look at the displays. Get one that has a metal gear driven instead of plastic or rubber gear. You lift the part you put the food in and look at the bottom underneath part to see. If it does not have metal it is a piece of junk that will not last.

The Oster blenders have metal drives and you can get one at Wal Mart.

Oster makes a commercial grade or bar type of blender if you want the very best. So does Waring i think.

I think the Waring Bar Blender is just the thing you are looking for avalible at most finer Department stores. They have a metal base and are designed for heavy use!

I have krups---this blender has lasted me for over 5 years-----it has metal blades and the glass jar is thicker then most of them you can buy----I think it was purchased at Kohls----but I have seen them at sears and pennys.

I like this one because it came with a food processer that hooks onto the base----its really convenient----also its diswasher safe---that was important to me----some of those with the plastic jars arn't or they get scratched up in the dishwasher

hope this helped!
