It's like the "Blitz Sale" at Walmart, the more freedom you give the more it it taken for granted. We are a free nation and with that a lot of people take it too far.
In less-free countries, the penalties are more strict for crimes so the people fear incarceration more. Sometimes there is no incarceration - steal and your hands are cut off, rape and you are castrated, kill and you are killed - usually minutes after you are deemed guilty.
In the US, we tend to drag it on because the criminal has rights here. That's why it could take years for a person to be put to death on death row.

Well it is, it is the land of the free: .
maybe because the less freedom there is, the more precious it gets...
Or maybe it is simply a saying made by (literary) free people...
Of maybe it is a saying made by incarcerated people, like: the land of the free (all of you outside) and the home of the brave (all of us in jails)...
Or the food is good so no one wants to leave...
Of it is a practical solution for the homeless...
Or it isn't the land of the free...
(and someone has been watching too many stupid dictator-like-run-countries somewhere far far away... travel a little, explore by yourself and stop watching tv, rock... guy ;-)

Land of the free means you are not under a dictator and you have rights that people from other countries don't have. The reason we have more people in prison is because we have more liberty to break the law. If a person in another country breaks the law, they may not get sent to prison, they may get a harsh punishment, such as death or something crazy because they are under the control of a dictator. We have to have some sort of punishment for people who abuse their freedom and liberties. You can't logically think that just because we have the motto "Land of the free" that we should let everyone in prison run free. They are there for a reason.

Good question. Perhaps it is a result of your laws.

Law abiding citizens do not go to jail. Only those who break the law and are given a trial before a judge or a judge and jury. Freedom is something you give up when you choose to break the law. When you exercise that freedom, you pay.

It IS the land of the free, until you break a law and have to face up to your crime. This is as it should be. Without laws and prison sentances, life here would be spent in fear of all those who would do us harm.

Freedom has noting to do with jails. If people break the laws, that is where they end up....so the better question is why do so many abuse their freedom to simply break laws....
