If you move in or marry someone with SSI, the amount received from SSI will decrease. They figure the amount you get based on total household income and assets, and there is a maximum amount allowed. Any income will reduce the SSI dollar for dollar until the SSI amount is zero.

SSI is a type of welfare program for those who are disabled and haven't worked long enough to earn regular SS disability income.

Once marriage enters into the picture, SSI will be cut by the amount one of you has earned on a job. In other words, you can't work and collect SSI unless your income is below poverty level.

My boyfriend and I can't marry because we both get SSDI. If we marry, I will lose $1,100 per month on my SSDI and we will have to live totally on his income plus I will only get $200 per month. So we won't be getting married anytime soon.

To Mama Pastafarian:

Thanks for your e-mail. It was greatly appreciated. You are right. I called Social Security and my boyfriend and I are free to marry without our incomes being affected. My girlfriend told me otherwise but she was wrong and we've been wanting to get married for 8 years now. Thanks to you, there will be wedding bells in my near future.
