its usually done in a large arena, like a sports arena, and people start it by standing up and throwing their arms in the air, and then they sit down. they do this in a line, one after another, and eventually everyone else catches on and the entire stadium is doing it. you can just see the people in the sections going up and down and it looks a lot like a wave, which is why they call it that.

Um...the only meaning that I can think of is the wave that a gigantic group of people do. Like...its when the people to the far right stand up with their hands in the air, then sit down, and then when they are almost sitting down the person right next to them stands up with their hands in the air and sits down...this happens until the people to the far left have all sat down...then 3 seconds later...it happens in the opposite direction. Did you by any chance have your hands in the air??? O.o

Some times the major change in the society or culture. For example there is a wave of change in domain name. The new extensions are available and people are looking for the names they prefer. It happens with business also...

it started in san diego , california .
people at one end of the stadium , or arena , stand, and as the line passes them , they wave their arms , creating a wave all around the stadium . sometimes during intense games the waves can gain momentum , and move pretty swiftly .
