Okay, we can't ban them completely. Fine. But should we restrict their use to prevent them from becoming a mental crutch?
What do you think???

I find it disturbing that high schoolers these days are allowed to use calculators as a normal part of class. I have a 16 year old sister who is taking algebra without having a firm grasp of basic math, and people are allowed to graduate every day without basic computational skills. When we are competing with countries like China, the dumbing down of our schools is definitely going to come back and bite us in the rear.

I think if calculators are found to be an issue, only graphing calculators should be banned. If you have a calculator that can perform basic math functions and NOT store information, I don't see a problem. What was the reason for the ban?

Much high school and most college math is impossible without a graphing calculator. You can still do simple calculations in your head, while still using a calculator for more complex things to save time. Also, much thought is needed in many calculations/formulas entered INTO the calculator. Calculators and computers are only as smart as the people using them. It would be foolish to limit their use.

I feel we should restrict them at a younger age as well as for anything that is below a certain level. For example, everything below algebra II or Geometry could be restricted, while it could be allowed for the harder classes. I used a calculator alot in highschool and now wish I used it less.

Yes.... kids don't need calculators til they get to upper level math in high school or college. It's just another contraption that is ruining education.

Let me ask you this: Do you ever use one? The answer is "of course", unless you really like using long division with paper and pencil. So why wouldn't we teach our kids to use one?
Leading mathmeticians will say that we should certainly teach kids how to use this valuable and inexpensive tool. It's accurate and easy to learn. But it will not be worth much unless they also learn how to estimate and reason with numbers.

No, u can't ban them but I dont see why they can't take the approach most colleges and Universities take.

1.Pre-Algebra-Never allowed
2. Algebra-sometimes allowed
3. Calc-Always allowed
4. Stats-Always allowed
