We retain a lot of memories by smell. Sometimes, a component in a perfume or cologne might remind us of something or something unpleasant, and it could be so buried in your subconscious you might not be aware of what exactly you don't like about it. You just don't.
I agree that it isn't always about the price. "Cheap" is a word with a lot of negative impact we choose when we really want to make a point not about the offensive perfume but the wearer of it. If I don't like someone, no perfume would ever make them smell good to me.
My mom used to wear this heavy stuff called Opium--hated it even though I loved her. After she passed away, sometimes I'll smell it on something she used to wear and it would smell really great to me.
There are some brands of perfume that are not expensive but bring memories of my youth because that was all I could afford back then. Remember "Heaven Scent"? Sometimes I wear it just for fun.
At work I surprise customers by being able to identify a perfume they're wearing. It's hard because a scent combines with a person's body chemistry and smells unique to them. But some features are pretty obvious about the perfume no matter who wears it.
So, really, the answer is trying different scents and knowing what you like, no matter what the price. If you are buying a gift for someone, get a sample and let them try it and see if it works for them. And again, if you like it who really cares about what others think?
My favorites: Chanel No.5, Beautiful, Coco, L'air du Temp and on the less pricey side English Lavender, After the Rain by Aran, Bath and Body Work's Fig and Brown Sugar

Anything you can buy in a drugstore without a theft device.
Not all cheap perfumes are bad anymore. Before cheap perfumes were known for developing a nasty slightly musty/mildewy tone when worn with time or for having strong flowery/fruity scents paired with cheap alcohol as the method of scent release. But now, chemical developments have improved and created really nice scents.
But yes it was the ingredients, the price, and the actually smell. With a true cheap perfume you actually will recognize its cheapness with your nose.

Generally, what is labeled as "cheap perfume" is called such because it smells bad rather than good. It has nothing to do with its price. Think about shoes. If you bought a pair of Nikes that were of good quality, but on clearance for $20, you would not complain that they are cheap shoes. But if you bought a pair of sneakers at Kmart, for $20, they most assuredly would be of poor quality. Perfume works the same way, to a lesser degree.
Something I would consider "cheap perfume" would be anything that you can buy at 7 mile fair, state fair, or on the street. Sometimes things like Stetson, Exclamation, or the Coty body sprays can be considered such, but I happen to like inexpensive Kmart perfumes.
Non-cheap perfume would be anything by Channel, (although if piled on it can smell like cheap perfume), or Lancome, etc...

Cheap perfume is perfume that doesn't deserve to be called perfume because it smells worse the trash around the corner that hasn't been picked up in over 3 weeks.. Just like cheap cologne! It's cologne.. but it's stinks like that garbage! And a lot of the times you can tell because when you smell it before you can smell anything your nose stings..

A "cheap" perfume is not only cheap in price but cheap in ingredients. The cheap kinds are mostly alcohol and don't hold the scent like the real versions do.

I would say that cheap perfume would be like under twenty dollars. The girl wearing the perfume could also make it cheap by being cheap herself.

A very expensive perfume mellows on the skin..you can smell it but only just so much.
cheap perfume either disappears from the skin all at once and you can only smell it in hair and clothes...or it doesnt mellow and stinks like someone was embalmed with it.
Jean Nate is cheap and nasty....just for example.

The ingrediants make it cheap. Cheap perfumes use weaker oils so the scent is not as strong or goes bad quickly.

If you can buy it from WalMart, it's cheap. I spend about $65-80 per bottle of perfume and some might think that is cheap.

I would think that outside of religion there is nothing wrong with a carefully thought out suicide. I am thinking of a case when a person has terminal cancer and in unbearable pain. Why prolong the agony and expense? It is wrong when it is contemplated from the viewpoint of a disturbed person who might in time be over the depression and have everything to live for - who in retrospect, if it were possible for them to reconsider, would be horrified at having done it. From a religious viewpoint God gives life and only He/She has a right to take it away.
