I think people are mainly embarrassed, or else haven't been taught how to react in this situation. I mean, anyone can ignore a little discreet *parp* with a tiny bit of a stink to it, but if someone lets rip and releases eau de rotting egg, you can't pretend you didn't notice, especially if it's invading your nostrils and violating your sense of well-being! In which case a nervous laugh allows you to alleviate yourself of the uncomfortable aura that grows between you.

Likewise it is a sign of immaturity - e.g, school children are likely to find it hilarious.

The sound is also rather comical, and I think at times it's a reaction to surprise to laugh, for example, tickling works on the premise that it is unexpected and surprises your nerves, the consequence of which is laughter.

That is just a part of nature. Try ignoring the person that farts and maybe and hopefully nobody else will laugh. Also when you grow up a little, then you will know when to laugh and when not to laugh.

We all used to be little kids. At that time the sound of a fart sounded just darn funny. Well as people grow up that action sometimes stays with them resulting in a laugh.

I believe that people laugh because it is such a random act outside of the everyday. We all try so much to follow the rules and adhere to society, that when something like a "fart" squeeks out of you, it is funny because it breaks the rules. A fart brings you down to a realistic level in life. It is something that everyone does, and we try so hard to control it because that is what our parents have tried to tell us. It is just nice to not have to worry about what other people think some times.

People laugh when someone farts because they dont know what else to do. It would be impolite to say "ewwww" in most situations, and naive to pretend you didn't hear it. Another reason is that it reminds you of embarrasing times, you yourself, have let one rip in public by accident. Laughter is usually used as an impulsive response when no other responsive action seems to fit the situation.

We also we laugh at it depending on the situation, who farts and the noise...

Actually, many people just ignore it, depends on if it's really loud. If I were with one or two persons, I would ignore it, or depending on who it was, maybe I would ask about health or food related to gas. My direct answer to your question is that laughing at something tends to relieve embarrassment that people feel about it, both the do-er and the innocent bystanders.

It is common for people to laugh when they are embarrassed - even by someone else's stupid actions. When someone farts I leave the room. I don't like to have my breathing space violated by methane waste.!!!!
