If you don't want to go the PC route, get a PS2. It's got a lot of awesome RPGs (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc).
If you're going handheld, the Nintendo DS is a pretty cool system and loads of fun to play.

I'm a Nintendo fan at heart, so that always sways my opinion, but one things that I can say for certain is this. The Xbox is the absolute WORST choice when looking for role playing games. They have nearly no games, and even fewer worth playing.
Admittedly, in terms of number of titles available, the PS2 is the best choice, but there are some absolutely great RPGs for the Gamecube that never seem to get the recognition they deserve.
Just stay as far away from the Xbox as possible, and you'll be fine.

A computer is the best for role playing games. But if you want a console, get a gamecube for RPG games.

definitely the ps2 for rpg games. It has the most games for any system and it is filled with high quality rpgs. The gamecube is definitely not what you're looking for unless you want kiddy games.

I THINK THAT PS2 MIGHT HAVE THE BEST SELECTION, XBOX DOES HAVE SOME GAMES BUT ITS NOT AS WIDE AS PLAYSTATION. TRY A COMPUTER, THEY WILL DEFINETELY HAVE A BETTER SELECTION OF ROLE PLAYING GAMES
