Need some more info about the skipping is it in the engine etc.
Timing could be out loose belt, and last tune up?
Check your fluids, oil change lately?
It almost sounds like your transmission is on the way out
skipping usually caused when the teeth and gears in the transmisson get chewed away I hope this helps That sucks if it is transmission replacement will usually run you about 2000.00
so its your call most mechanic shops will take your car for test drive and give you their ideas that may be causing this problem this is mine.

The car might need new spark plugs and plug wires. Fuel injectors may be dirty, but that probably would not smooth out in high gear.

Could be's are many, dirty carb, plugs, etc. If you are saying it "smooths out" a little, but not completely, try new plugs,
still skips, try a set of plug wires, probably needs them anyway.
Get it out and open it up, see if it smokes (valves)
