If the runner does not touch home the run does not technically count. If you forget to touch home or just miss home. The run will not count, and you will be out.

The player who hit the home run must step on every base, as must any other runners who were on base when the home run was hit. If any runner missed a base, when play resumes with the next batter, the pitcher throws to the base that may have been missed and the umpire will signal safe or out. It is very, very rare that the team in the field will even challenge a home run.

Plain tradition, and the glory of hitting one and running around the bases is pure euphoria to a hitter. Oh, and inside the park home runs play a role as well.

It's just part of the rules, just like four balls is a walk and three strikes is an out. To score a run, you have to touch all the bases, in order....even if the ball was hit outta the yard.

It's closure.
Why finish the last lap of a race if you are in the lead?
Why receive a trophy after winning a series?
Silly question,really.
