As long as politicians and law enforcement can make a buck by keeping it illegal it will stay that way. Just like drugs. The old theory is that prostitution causes abuse of women and children but reality is guys that have been drained by a prostitute do not want sex for some time. With all the porn out there morality is getting to be a thing of the past. Society needs to grow up and legalize prostitution. Think of al the tax money it could generate. Europe has legalized prostitution and so does Nevada and the sex crime occurrence is less than in the rest of the united states.

I think the reason it is against the law is due to the STD factor. But I also think an even bigger reason is because of all of the money involved. It is hard to track something like that.
Seems to me the state is responsible for those laws. Look at Nevada for instance. The " Chicken Ranch" These people have to go in on a regular basis to be examined and they are watched carefully. If people want to do this to themselves, I think this is the safest way. However, there is less money involved for the prostitute because they have to pay the Ranch room and board...or whatever it is they pay, but I am sure the price is high.
People who chose to do this for a living are going to do it anyway, if it were a legal occupation at least they would be taxed just like any other "job" AND..........the spread of STD's would be monitored.
I am not for or against it either, just my thoughts....But, this is not a choice I would make for myself or my 2 daughters.

Double standards DO exist in just about every facet of human existance/society---and they abound in US government and law making entities of our country.
The justification for keeping prostitution illegal is the contention that STD's will rampantly spread with the opening and operation of nation-wide brothel chains. It would be too expensive to create a government run office to watchdog brothel operations to ensure strict business operating standards were maintained.
Like keeping open Homeland Security offices are cost effective.
Then, of course, there's the religious "right" : Pat Roberson / Jerry Falwell, Inc. If there's any reason to watch meddleings between church and state, these two deserve to be under the electron microscope. Nonetheless, great numbers of people avow to these two and their numbers are not ignored during election time.
And then there's little ol' Nevada: They might actually see waning profits from their own LEGAL brothels if nation wide brothel chains were to pop up all over the country. They would have to get in the race and open up their own franchise chains and take risks of staying alive as a larger business entity: too much work for them for what they now enjoy.
Amazing how our government, always hungry for the tax dollar, turn away from the idea of legal prostitution--when there's NOTHING to really be concerned about it being safe, which is proven such businesses can be done so--and can reap in BILLIONS yearly in tax revenues.

I always wondered the same thing since in new zealand its legal and it seems to be working well. Over there, prostitutes or sex workers have more rights, are more aware of STDs etc, and they are less likely to be exploited. I think prostitution is illegal due to moral issues. Maybe people are afraid that if prostitution became legal, then everyone would run and become a prostitute haha...whatever.

well most laws are based off of the decisions of religious groups. so I'm sure they have a hand in the laws behind prostitution
second is as others have said. it is hard for the government to find a way to regulate and tax it.
also what do you think would happen if a politician tried to change it or back a bill to make it legal? he would be ending his career right there on the spot, so none would dare to try to make it legal.
the other issue is the fact that if it was legal, where would you be able to get a girl? would you want women to be out selling themselves out in front of your child's school or in front of your church?
most women turn to drugs to be able to deal with what they are doing. mainly because such a profession is filled with the wrong element as well as most women can't deal with what they are doing if they are doing it with a clear head.
the only other point i can think of is when a guy is busted for soliciting sex, he is arrested and booked. end up having to pay a hefty fine in most cases and more then usual a john is in his car that is then confiscated and then sold.
states make a lot of money off of busting johns for soliciting sex.
i think that you are paying for sex with every girl just prostitutes are up and honest and give you a price. while dating you have to pay for entertainment, food, gifts, and time invested. with no promise that you are going to get what you want. it's not a bash on you women so please don't get offended. it's just that that's the reality of how things work.
if my oppinion offends any women i am sorry. but ask yourself, would a guy have a chance in hell if he took you out and didn't want to spend money on you?

Because who would be foolish enough to get with someone whom behaves the same but doesn't call herself a pro? lol...I often wonder how men relate to women in Ansterdam (sp?) because they don't need to play the game to get sex.
I think it's moral nature of the religious right and the feminist in the left. Others are generally semi-against of semi-for...so all it takes is two generally opposing figures to agree on something.
It's a county and state issue from what I heard...atleast in America. Although you're not going to get a lot of big counties get into, just because of the fear of losing their constituents...that's why it's only in Las Vegas, in the boonies.

I agree with you, it should be legal. It is legal in Nevada, so there is someplace in the US where its legal.
I think its illegal in most other US states because of the religious reasons you mentioned. If most people oppose it for religious reasons, their elected representatives will continue to outlaw it, it probably fits under the same category as gay marriage as something people see as a moral issue they feel so strongly about they'd like to make it illegal.

It's legal in parts of Nevada, but the rest of the states do not understand that Legal Prostitution would bring in a lot of revenue for their treasuries.

I don't think it should be. If 2 people are dating and the guy gives the girl money, isn't she still selling her goods? Yep. So y not?
About diseases, people get diseases all the time from cheating and they don't even get paid for that!
