If it was six, you'd be asking, "Why not 4?"
Probably because we need 8 hours of sleep a night.

The Eight-hour day movement, also known as the Short-time movement, had its origins in the Industrial Revolution in Britain, where industrial production in large factories transformed working life and imposed long hours and poor working conditions. With working conditions unregulated, the health, welfare and morale of working people suffered. The exploitation of child labour was common. The working day could range from 10 hours up to 16 hours for six days a week. Now people are trying to get 6 hour work days.. how lazy are we getting.

Okey 8 hours of work.. and 8 hours of sleep that is 16 hours... and 8 more hours 24. This divides the work into 3 shifts.. First shift, 2nd Shift, and my favorite 3rd shift -
1st shift: 8AM - 4PM (8 hours)
2nd Shift: 4PM - 12 Midnight (8 hours)
3rd shift: 12 Midnight - 8 AM (8 hours.. thats 24)

The 8 hour work day came somtime in the 1800s. When exactly I am not sure. It does help when a factory goes 24 hours a day. It helps to create 3 shifts.

there are places where u r expected to work even about 14-16 hours a day. it just depends on how competitive the society has become to elevate work time to become stronger.
personally, I believe there should not be any standard 8 hours work routine.. there itself u loose ur freedom.. u shud work when u want to or maybe when u have to(yeah u lost ur freedom here too).
