BOTH. I'm not being a smarta**, honest I'm not.
It made sense in an epiphany type way in a meditation I had a few years ago. It made perfect sense for quite awhile after that but since then my 'mind' has tried to get that clarity back - the feeling has faded. Now I just remember the answer being 'both'.
I've heard that from shamans, yogis, zen masters, ect. (anyone with a big picture view of things) that you can reach a level when all the world's so-called paradoxes don't exist as a paradox but as logical. But I think it has to be experienced and doesn't make sense to a linear-thinking organ like our brain.
I wouldn't be surprised if that type question has been used as a koan before, sort of like 'what is the sound of one hand clapping'?
You ponder it for as long as it takes (weeks, months, years) in spare time or meditations until one day - ding! - it makes sense because it has gotten your brain out of it's box. The brain doesn't 'get it' - but the spirit, which knows everything, does.

The egg came first by far. They have been the main delivery system for new batches of young for a lot longer than chickens have been around. The question, as asked, does not provide any real context, for exapmle specifying a chicken egg. If that is your intent, then you could just as well ask "which came first the human baby or the human adult from which it came?" What the question really comes down to is do you think evolution explains the development of life and its variety or do you believe God created everything out of thin air about 5000 years ago and inserted all kinds of fake fossil evidence in the ground to test our faith.

The egg.
Dinosaurs were around LONG before chickens and they were using eggs first.
Now if you mean a chicken egg, it all depends on how you stand on evolution vs creation
Evolutions says the egg. (genetic mutation means that an almost-chicken laid a mutant egg that hatched what we know as a chicken)
Creationism says the chicken. (God made chickens. Chickens made eggs)
The third option is that chickens are just an egg's way of making more eggs.

chicken....I couldn't think that when everything was first created by God he uttered 'egg' instead of 'chicken'..just like when he created man and woman and all the other he created them as they are not as an offspring but gave the capacity to produce
