There are four main issues:
1) Ads: By offering you free web pages, they may put ads on your page. I know many people don't like ads including myself. Especially when those ads may be of your competitors may promote things that you don't necessarily agree with, you will need think twice. If you don't care about the ads, that's okay; but if you do, you may want to consider a paid web hosting service.

2) Bandwidth: Free web page hosting providers like Yahoo Geocities only allow 15MB (or something like that) of traffic per hour. If there are lots of people hitting your site, your web site may become temporarily unavailable once the hourly bandwidth limit has been reached.

3) Disk space: Free web page hosting providers usually do not give you a lot of disk space for your files. If you have a lot of files, you may run out of space really quickly.

4) Server side programming technology: Free web page hosting providers usually provide very limited support when it comes to server side programming technology (i.e. ColdFusion, ASP, ASP .NET, PHP, or JSP). Usually they do support Perl script though. So, if you want to use some server side programming technologies, you will need to take this into consideration.

lots of data transfer is worth more than lots of storage space. but both are important. no matter what anyone tells you freewebs.com, tripod.com, and angelfire.com are the three worst free home page hosts on the web. trust me i been doing this a long time. don't even ask why they are bad. it would take too long to list all the bad things about each one.

★★ DATA TRANSFER ★★

◙ What is data transfer? Every file you put in your web site directory contains data. Let's say you have a 50 kilobytes page with two 60 kilobytes images on it for a total of 170 kilkobytes (kb). Every browser that displays this page will transfer 170 kilobytes of data from the server. If ten people view this page at once then 1.7 megabytes of data will be transferred from the server. Large file sizes and lots of visitors are your worst enemies when you have an account with very little data transfer allotted to you. Everytime you exceed your data transfer limit your site is shut down by your host for a period of time. They do this to get you to buy more data transfer from them or signup for a paid account. :(

◙◙◙ HOW TO GET AROUND THIS PROBLEM ◙◙◙

◙ Do you have mp3s, waves, lots of photos, video files, or some other large file size? Get an account at http://www.supload.com/ or http://www.megauploads.com/ and hot link them on your page using the source code these multimedia hosts provide you.

◙ The problem with these multimedia hosts is that you have to upload one or two files at a time. But they are free. If there server is offline for maintenance or some other reason your images won't load on your pages.

◙ If you have an account with a small data tranfer allotmet you should stay away from your web site except to make changes to it. If you use up all of the data transfer yourself no one else will be able to go there and I'm sure you don't want that. Low data tranfer is 3gb per month or less. But 5gb or 10gb can also be a low amount if you have lots of visitors and lots of large file sizes such as photos, large photos, music, videos etc. Obviously the more data tranfer you have the better off you are.

◙ Page visits, uploads, downloads and hot linking from your account to some other site(s), all count against your data tranfer allotment.
