Hi. I have 2 Syrian hamsters and 2 dwarf hamsters. All females. The 2 Syrian females are always in heat and their odor are strong. Their urine stinks too. They sleep a lot! The 2 dwarf hamsters are very cute and my kids carries them everywhere because they are better to handle and more alert.

Hamsters, in general, are not the most friendly of rodents. They tend to bite a lot, often for no apparent reason. Dwarfs tend to be more easy going than other hamsters, but it varies from one individual to the next.
You might want to consider getting another kind of rodent. Gerbils, mice, and rats are all much friendlier creatures than your average hamster. Rats do require a good deal of space, however, and need lots of toys and attention (and preferably friends) to keep them happy. Mice do best in all-female groups. Gerbils can be housed alone, but usually do fine with friends.
Hamsters should always be housed alone. They will happily kill each other.

Dwarf hamsters are the spawn of Satan! I had one that drew blood everytime you got near it! They're severely inbred, and antisocial. Even though they're definitely the cutest, they're not a pet that you'd want if you want to play with it. Gerbils are fantastic--and even though it sounds strange, rats are even better! I have one now, and she's almost as smart as my dogs...she's housetrained and can do several tricks, and is very clean. Try www.dapper.com.au for information about them--these people are a little crazy about their rats, but you'll find out everything you need to know!

ALSO--rats are the least likely rodent to bite you, so they're good for kids.

we had regular sized hamsters that enjoyed being handled and were a lot of fun to watch and play with. Then we bought two dwarf, long-haired hamsters and while they rated a 10 on the cuteness scale they were EVIL! cleaning their cage was risky business..they have sharp little teeth. They terrorized us and the one unfortunate kitty that stuck his nose in the cage. If you do get em buy gloves!

The pros of both are they are interesting to watch, involve responsibility for another life, and are considered "cute". The cons for both are they are not easily trained, they tend to be messy (sometimes getting feces stuck to their fur), and they tend to bite without provocation. A more interesting a smarter would have to be the mouse or the rat. Both are cleaner and trainable. They are used in laboratories for that reason. Good luck.

I have a Russian Dwarf Hamster. She's an amazing creature. She never fails to amuse me. Dward hamsters need constant stimulation. They need lots of toys, chew sticks, they need good little places to scoot and hide, they need to crawl around, climb over stuff, under stuff, they need a wheel to roam around in.

I bought her a Critter trails home. It has tubes for her to scoot around in, and a little platform for her to chill out on. She also has a built-in run ball that she stores food in and runs around in (Very annoying), but she also has a steel wheel inside her cage for her to run in, too. I bought her edible wooden houses so she climbs over those, crawls under them, and eats them. :)

My Gir has **NEVER** bitten me once! She nibbles my fingertips, but she has never EVER bitten me.
