I used a black spray paint and put it on thick.

The answer to this one is in deed nothing. The tree will form a callus where the branch was taken and protect itself. Years ago they use to use pruning paint or tar but over the years they have found out using these just stopped the tree from healing itself and some times caused more problems. Give it a cut and let it go. Nature is the best medicine for this.

They sell a brush on product at nurserys and Home Depot. It may be available in spray form as well. I've always just used regular black or brown spray paint from around the house and never had a problem. Go orange or red if you want it to be Festive! You can always repaint it.

if you want it to come back do nothing, more shoots will sprout. if you dont want any more branches to grow, i have used that black stuff you use to spread around chimney's, it did work on that part of the branch but then there came the shoots from around it. happy cuttings

The best thing to use is nothing. Your tree will heal much faster.
