The turf is very thick and unless the sprinklers are on I can not find them and invariably will run over one or more and shatter them. Also, can you tell me to repair them on my own as it's very expensive to buy new heads and have someone come in to reinstall them. Help, please.

Maybe what you should do is go out with a weed-eater BEFORE you mow, and eat around your sprinklers, that way you know where they're at.
As for repairing them, you could probably go to Lowe's or Home Depot and ask someone to help you get the right supplies, and walk you through how to do it. I'd tell you myself, but I haven't seen a sprinkler system put together or repaired for about 15 years.

Perhaps you should change the heads to the pop-up type. That way, when they are in use they pop up to spray and then once the water cuts off they become level with the ground and you can mow over them without destroying them. You can repair them on your own and the people in the irrigation department at both Lowes and Home Depot can tell you how and what parts you will need. You must know the type of system you have, however, so they can help you find the correct parts and tell you what to do for your sprinklers. It is much less expensive and pretty easy to do once someone explains it to you. I can tell you what to do to fix my sprinkler heads, but can't really give you instructions for your system. Pop up heads will definitely solve your problem, however.

I would get/make those dayglo flags on a wire to put in all the sprinklers before I mowed. You'd then have to go back with your weed wacker or something to get those areas. Can't you get them sunk deeper into the ground to prevent this?

Mow more often when it's easy to see them. I used to buy spares and use an internal pipe wrench to remove the broken pipe nipples when one was broken off.
