I am planning a quick weekend getaway, it may even turn out to be one night. I want to find a small beach city/town with great views and upper scale yet budget friendly hotels. I am one of those that doesn't venture to far from home and I know there is a lot on highway 1. Anyone have any ideas???

I'd check out the bed & breakfast inns in the town of Mendocino. It's very quaint, artsy, great dining & breathtaking views of the ocean.
Alternatively, you can check out Ocean View Lodge (see link to website below). It's reasonably priced, but not a dive.

My husband and I always stay at the Best Western in Pacifca. It's on Highway 1 about 15 minutes south of San Francisco.
The hotel sit on rock away beach. It's small and intimate and the price is about moderate. We always have a great view of the ocean from our room.
Well, that's my recommendation for what it's worth.

How about Gold Beach, Oregon. A wonderful hotel called Jot's.

I don't know if you are North of SF on Highway 1 or South. If you are North go to Gualala or Mendocino. If you are South got to Monterey or Big Sur.
