Call your property tax office and be really friendly. The people that work there have several different cross references they can do to advise you on all property transactions.

In Boston, we have a thing called a Registry of Deeds, it has all the housing records for the whole city. I don't know where you live, obviously, but if you're in the US that information is public and somewhere the government has it, and you can access it. try looking online at your city, town or state's website to see if you can find where this information is stored. Some places have put the info online, so you can access it from your home. Of course, if the person owns property outside of your town or county or whatever, I can't help you. Sorry, good luck!
