It's September 16, not the fifth of May, which commemorates the defeat of the French forces.

you are so wrong, may 5th has nothing to do with mexico's independence, i'm mexican and i think it's hilarious that y'all think it is.
that being said, we celebrate our independence on the night of every september 15th., when at 11pm the president comes out on the balcony of the national palace on the main place in mexico city and recalls the words once said by "Don Miguel Hidalgo" called the father of mexican independence, where he said "Viva México" (something like "long lives mexico") and rang the bell at the church in a place called "Dolores, Hidalgo" summoning mexicans to rise against the native spaniards who opressed them.
the story says that "Don Miguel Hidalgo" made the call on the dawn of September 16th. and that's the day marked in the calendar as a national holiday, so that would be Mexico's Independence Day even though we celebrate one hour before the date changes to it.
