And almost every where else. It's a narcotic drug most people don't or won't believe that there are negative side effects. If you suffer any form of depression it should be avoided, it kills brain cells and though not physically addictive it can be psychologically addictive.mood swings occur which can be unpleasant not just for the user , but for those who have to put up with them. I don't agree that all who partake go on to harder drugs , but there is evidence to suggest it does happen. If you want to see what the long term effects on the brain are ask a teaching hospital or the morgue they will show the facts that can't be disputed. this is not some harmless recreational drug that has no consequences.

Do we remember a guy named Al Capone? He became real popular back during a time called prohibition. (When alcohol consumption was illegal in the USA). He made a fortune selling booze illegally and it wasn’t Elliot Ness who brought him to justice it was the IRS. They arrested him for not paying taxes.
The point I'm trying to make here is the government could not regulate or tax alcohol when it was illegal so they made it legal again. The problem with pot is, it can be grown just about any ware by just about any body. There for the government would never be able to adequately regulate pot and if they can’t regulate it they can’t tax it.

one reason could be that it is harder to ******** people who are stoned. the government could lose some credibility if everyone stopped for a while, smoked (or ate) a little pot and then considered whether everything they have been told is true.
in comparison, the following things are LEGAL in France, for an adult.....please note that i don't do any of them......
1: taking a 2-month old calf from under its mother and killing it
2: force-feeding geese to make their livers taste nicer
3: sodomising a 16-year old boy
but the French won't let you smoke a joint
Morality is screwed up all around the world, isn't it?

Check out the book "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" By Jack Herer. This book gives an in-depth look into the conspiracy behind Marijuana Prohibition, and many other interesting facts about hemp use in the industrial world and marijuana for medicinal purposes.
To quote from the book...on hemp industries...
"Experts today conservatively estimate that, once fully restored in America, hemp industries will generate $500 billion to a trillion dollars per year, and will save the planet and civilization from fossil fuels and their derivatives - and from deforestation! "
"The paper industry offers even greater possibilities. As an industry it amounts to over $1,000,000,000 a year, and of that eighty per cent is imported. But hemp will produce every grade of paper, and government figures estimate that 10,000 acres devoted to hemp will produce as much paper as 40,000 acres of average pulp land."
On Marijuana Prohibition...
"The weight of empirical fact and large amounts of corroborating evidence indicate that the former Reagan/Bush/Quayle administrations, along with their unique pharmaceutical connections (see "Bush/Quayle/Lilly Pharmaceutical Sellout" below), have probably conspired at the highest levels to withhold information and to disinform the public, resulting in the avoidable and needless deaths of tens of thousands of Americans.
And they did it, it seems, intending to save their own investment - and their friends' - in the pharmaceutical, energy and paper industries; and to give these poisonous, synthetic industries an insane advantage over natural hemp and protect the billions of dollars in annual profits that they stood to lose if the hemp plant and marijuana were not prohibited! "
Very informative book.

Because in the 1930s Harry Anslinger had marijuana classified as a schedule one drug right up there with heroin and coccaine. Schedule I drugs are supposed to be assumed to have no medical benefits. Yet doctors agree that marijuana is useful for glaucoma, eating disorders, and chemotherapy/cancer relief.
But the Christian right continues to suppress this harmless drug in the USA and therefore we remain a backwards nation.
For the other ignoramouses that have responded here, there are ZERO deaths as a result of marijuana usage. Look up your legal drugs like cigarettes and alcohol.....deaths too numerous to count.

Because some of the cartels give lots of money to reelection campaigns, and they would stand to lose tons of money on it if it became legal.
Also, there are way too many tight a***d bible thumpers in the world to allow such a sin to occure! The Christian right has way too much pull on the government.

how many people have died from using marijuana? NONE. Alcohol kills just as much if not more brain cells than marijuana does, and it kills more people a year. So the real question should be, why is alcohol STILL LEGAL?, while we throw marijuana smokers, who are otherwise good members of society, into prison for years, while we're giving people with dwi's probation. Indeed, the morals are effed up everywhere.
