Why is football called soccer in North America but nowhere else?

And by the way, football makes more sense than soccer and calling american football, football, doesn't make any sense...

I dont know, but I am an American, and I just call it football, i hat e american football. It is the stupidest sport ever. I love football, and it does not make any sense to call it soccer either. Most people here just call it football anyways, except that it sometimes causes confusion.

Because American football developed in popularity in the US much earlier and faster than "futbol."

Once the European version started to catch on in the US, the term "football" was already assigned to a particular sport, thus another name was necessary.

Now the term "soccer" originated around 1891 as a term used in English universities, but is now used practically nowhere other than the US.

Futbol is the Spanish word for Soccer. They american-ized the word to Football. In America, we just changed the words around a bit. In Spanish, futbol de norteamericano means Football. Hope that helps.
