There are rough endoplasmic reticulum which contain ribosomes that synthesizes and transports protein and smooth endoplasmic reticulum doesn't contain ribosomes but it produces lipids and metabolizes carbohydrates.

there are rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) and smooth end. reteculum (sER)
rER... is surrounded by ribosomes while sER is not surroundd by ribosomes..
they extend from nucleus to golgi apparatus.

smooth and rough, rough has ribosomes on it, smooth doesn't.
