Be foolish. When you Act the fool it implies that you are not actually a fool but you are playing one in this situation.

Well, this is a big assumption, but here it goes:
In history, fools were servants to the king. They did everything and anything the royals wanted. So to "act the fool" is to do what your told or even to kiss up.

It means that you are doing something that other people will ridicule you for. Centuries ago, a "fool" was someone hired by royalty and the very wealthy to entertain them, usually with wit and physical, slapstick humor. Now it has a more negative connotation.
