I think of 'America' both as a country and as the continents in the western hemisphere. When early explorers first discovered the 'New World', they named this land America. As time went on, people of the Old World began to refer to those people that inhabit primary English colonies as Americans, and so the name stuck.
Yes, other countries are in America too so it might be more 'proper' to call people of the United States, United Statesmen or something to that effect, though it would sure sound weird.

You can't be serious about the unified continent theory. The states of the United States of America is as diverse as they come.

the continent of North and South America are just that...continents...
the United States represent each of the 50 states in the union. Canada is a whole other country. and as such are Canadian...with their own states within the country such as Quebec and Montreal.
although we use the name America...American, its "common" for it to be interpreted as someone living in the USA...American is shorter and easier to say than United Sates of American. then to place the people within a certain section within the USA, they are called by their state names. such as a New Yorker, or a Texan etc etc.
Similarly Europe is comprised of many different countries...and people from their are referred to as Europeans, but individually their are Britons, Germans, French...etc etc.
so in short YES there are more countries within the Americas...but they ARE different than the USA

Yes, others are in America. So there is the country America, and there is the area "America" also. My Mexican friends say that I shouldn't say I am from America because Mexico is in America, but then I say that they can call themselves Americans if they want to, and that would be correct. Of course, they choose to call themselves Mexicans.

I think of it as the USA. To think of the continent I have to have the North or South thrown in front.
