First, he was a peanut. Then he was a pumpkin. My brother inlaw asked why we called him pumpkin. We repliedin unison, "Because he's bigger than a peanut."

Personally I don't like nicknames. In fact, when I named my children, I named them in such a way that their names couldn't be shortened. Alot of times you will meet a person 35 years old or older who is known as 'bubba' or some other god awful name. These mostly are due to the fact that someone 'gifted' them with a nickname when they were younger.

We have permanant nicknames in my family. Im not sure how most of these names came up, they are just what we are called. My dad is Louie. It has nothing to do with his name at all. My brother is Mo. I am Annie. My sister is Grump (hers is the only one that hasnt stuck with her). My nephew is Turtle.

We call my son Junior (even though he's not a Jr.) and apple, referring to that fact that he behaves a lot like my husband at times and the "apple" doesn't fall far from the tree. When he's up to no good, I refer to him as "your son" when speaking to my husband.
