There is now a daycare credit (Universal Child Care Benefit) of $1200/year for each child on Canada under the age of 6. The legislation came through with the new conservative government. GST has also been lowered 1% as of July 1st This credit can be used for child care or whatever you decide (many financial advisers are recommending rolling it into a RESP for the child's education. If you are already a recipient of the Child Tax Benefit (AKA Baby Bonus) you need not apply. However, if you are financially in a tax bracket that you do not receive the CTB you can print off the application on-line and fax it in. If you haven't applied as of yet, you will not receive the first $100 payment in July however payments are retroactive and you will receive the full $1200 this year.

I haven't lived in Canada in 5 years, but it seems to me that July is when the new amounts based on your 2005 taxes start to be paid. So if you earned less in 2005 than 2004 I think you'd have more money, yes. Or if you are entitled to a very small CTB they pay it all in one go, in July as well.

But I heard that Harper wanted to change a bunch of stuff so I don't know if any of this is still true.
