think about it...theres only one world cup, therefore only one winner.
it sucks, but who ever isnt first place technically lost. no one wants to be 2nd, 3rd, 4th or whatever....they want to be number 1.

I'd rather be 2nd, 3rd or 4th than lose in the Quarterfinals AND display the most unsportsmanlike conduct in quite a while like the Argentinians did. I lost all respect for Argentina (not that I had much because of Maradonna).

You bet they do because it can mean the difference in keeping financial funding coming into their sport. Countries and/or companies don't tend to continually favor supporting a lost cause but any team that makes it to the World Cup in general is seen as having risen above the others. Therefore making it to the quarter and semi-finals, much less run for third is a big incentive in continuing to support them.

Depends on what you want. Let's say everyone thought Brazil would be the champs,so it is not a succes for them even if they were 2nd or 3rd. But Ghana people were so happy that they qualified fm the group.
And Turkey was 3rd,Korea was 4th in 2002.

I agree with you the game for third palce is probably a way for advertisers to get money or something , no one cares about those palces i mean think about it do you remember who was in third palce in 2002? didn't think so.........
