Is there any way, other than sewing them...to stop them from fraying?

There is a product you can get in the fabric dept of walmart called Fray check - it is kind of like a glue. You apply it to the cut edges, let it dry. It should help the situation.

Sure get an iron on patch use it on the under side works perfect if done properly (follow directions).

... use a lighter to singe off the ends...it keeps them in place and won't fray...
