I'm on my mom's PC (she's 71) and it's set on caps lock. I've told her again and again to keep caps lock off. She'll use proper casing for, say, 1 e-mail, and then go back to ALL CAPS. She knows how to turn it off. I've noticed others who like all caps. I am wondering... is there perhaps some other reason people insist on yelling their whole e-mail and IM's instead of using caps for emphasis or for proper nouns.

What up?

Your mom might have at least one thing to deal with:
Her age - something new to learn at 71 might be a little bit difficult.

Perhaps that's one sure way to get attention.

Others have a habit of leaving their caps lock on for a variety of reasons including not knowing it's not polite to scream during an email or chat session. It might be shear laziness on the part of some, not wanting to exert themselves to occasionally use the shift key.

I hope when you are her age, others take care and don't put you down because you might forget something from time to time.

I wish you both well.

It's lazy and rude. It's a lot easier to type in all caps rather than put things in the proper case. So if you don't do it you're just being lazy. Sending lazy communications is rude. It's as if someone isn't worth the time of doing something right.

Also it's for people who are just after attention. It calls more attention to their post if they type in all caps.

Sometimes when I try for the "A" I nick caps lock and I look down when I type . Or I get it when I go for the shift key. Once you have your message typed you don't feel like starting over!!

Some people in chat rooms use it to make them stand out. Others may just have a hard time seeing the letters on the screen when its in lower case. It all depends on the person.

i know what u mean...i for one hate it when people text SMSs in caps..
dunno why they do it though...maybe they have a different perspective on the meaning of a sentence written in caps. maybe it's just their way of signaling that all they have to say is important; maybe they don't see it as means of yelling while online...
or...they prefer the way the letters look when the caps lock is on...:)

I AGREE, I DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE CONSIDER IT YELLING. IT'S EASIER BECAUSE YOU DON'T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT CAPITALIZING CERTAIN LETTERS. EVERYTIME YOU START A NEW SENTENCE YOU DON'T NEED TO PUSH SHIFT TO GET TO A CAPITAL.

TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS JUST FASTER AND SIMPLER. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YELLING.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHERE THAT IDEA CAME FROM.

HOPE THAT HELPS. AND FOR THE RECORD, I'M NOT YELLING.

See I like doing it sometimes just because, even though I do normally type the correct way. I dont understand why many THINK THIS IS YELLING....never have...

I don't know about anyone else but it is a long way for my fingers to reach to turn it off.
