The powerhouse....

Within the mitochondria, a cellular metabolic process called oxidative phosphoralation occurs which utilizes the electron transport chain for ATP production. ATP is the energy unit of the cell

If you want to get into the knitty gritty of details. NADH produced from glycolysis and the TCA cyle donates it electron to various electron carriers ranging from high potential to low potential. As the electrons transfer from on carrier to another with a lower potential, a proton is pumped out of the membrane producing a proton motive force (PMF). This PMF creates a potential difference across the membrane. The flow of the proton back inside of the mitochondria through an enzyme call ATP synthase produces an ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate.

i've heard people call it the powerhouse of the cell, if thats what you're asking. its called so because its the site where cellular metabolism occurs. its breaks down ATP releasing the engery stored so the cell can function and do work
