If they are pink, they are only meant to connect two personal computers together. They are not supposed to connect you to the network.

Yes. The connectors can come lose. The connectors may not have been crimped well.
Indeed, your dog might bite through one.
Keep in mind that only 4 of the conductors are really used, so it might still work with a broken wire.
I buy ethernet cables at
http://www.newegg.com Your local computer store probably charges 4 times more for the same thing.

It can be bad to begin with and take time to work loose (inside), or it can stretch, so yes it can go bad.
And the color of the cable is completely irrelevant unless you are in an office with a specific color coding.
