Actually, the Smurfs as a race were already in existence when GARGAMEL CREATED SMURFETTE! She originally had black hair and an evil heart and was supposed to lead all the Smurfs into Gargamel's latest trap.
But when she went to their village, the Smurfs were so kind to her that although she carried out her orders, Smurfette freed the Smurfs before Gargamel could kill them.
Because of this unselfish good deed, her heart became pure and her hair turned blonde. She then spent the rest of her life (and the series) happily ever after with the Smurfs.
As for Baby Smurf, I remember it had something to do with Papa Smurf making a wish on a full moon night. After all, remember, this was a Saturday Morning cartoon show!

Not enuff apparently... Thats how come they were always doing sumting else than her all the time.
but lee up there is right. gargamel created smurfette, cause smurfs were asexual, which is the main reason why they became such a hit. the kids loved them, the tv execs loved them, the advertisers loved them. evry1 happy.
personally, still, i firmly believe smurfette ended up marrying hefty... they kinda clicked.
as for the baby smurf and all the kid smurfs after him... theyre the equivalent of gary cerone in van halen... who cares, really?

One female, a village of males. It was amazing she could keep her sweet disposition.
To answer your question; Baby smurf came from somewhere, and I suspect if females were truly that rare in a society, that yes, they would be protected and supported so they could focus on reproduction and child-rearing (as Queen Bees do). In cruder terms, she had to be sleeping around or the recessive genetics would have caused some scary mutations that would likely make the Smurfs look more like the Blue Man Group.

No but as a kid I always confused that their was only one Smurfette. Where were the other girls...I think the writers were on some kind of drug when they wrote this show.
