peoplepc.com

All are about $10 per month or so

The OLD computer should be AT LEAST Windows 98. It should have AT LEAST 64MB of RAM. It should have AT LEAST 1GB of Free disk space. It should have a working modem.

You should see WINDOWS 98 when you hit the START button.

Right Click on the MY COMPUTER icon and pick PROPERTIES. It should tell you how much memory is installed. Then click on the TAB that says Device Manager and see if there is a Modem.

Double Click on MY COMPUTER, then Right Click and pick PROPERTIES on the C drive and look at how much FREE space is left.

Go into the Control Panel and open MODEMS. Click on the Diagostics button, pick your modem and click on the QUERY MODEM. If the modem does not respond, you don't have a working modem.

If these things are not satisfied, then THROW that poor old computer away. It will cost more than it is worth to get the thing working.

Aim for $10 per month. Aside from the providers mentioned here already, take a look at http://www.thelist.com and check for a local provider in her area. The whole idea is that she might want to TALK to someone that cares.

The phone companies are usually the cheapest. You can find dial-up service for about $10 USD per month also like from http://www.foxinternet.com or from http://www.getnetscape.com/compareplans.adp for plans as low as $6.95/mth USD.
