my compaq laptop keeps shutting itself off. Its beginning to happen more frequently. I thought it was overheating but now it will shutdown after its only been on for a minute. I know the fans are running, and i haven't recently installed any new hardware or software. Any help would be greatly appreciated

make sure you don't have ups selected in the power options, if it is looking for an ups connection on the serial port and doesn't see one, it will shut down. (it's a compaq, nuf said)

Try the following: Right-click on the My Computer icon. Select properties, and go into the Advanced tab. Click the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery area.

About 2/3 of the way down you will see a check box that says "Automatically restart." Uncheck the box.

This will not stop whatever is causing the error that is rebooting your computer. But it might cause the laptop to display the error rather than just reboot. Hopefully then you will be able to see the error and have a better idea how to fix it.

if you can keep it on long enought check the screensaver properties cause someone might have accidently messed it up. or maybe a virus got into it. and you can try the recovery cd. also how long have you had your laptop for?
