In one of the men's doubles quarterfinals at Wimbledon today, Nestor/Knowles defeated Aspenlin/Perry 5-7, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 23-21.

If a set in tennis usually never goes past 13 games (not including tie-breakers), how is a score of 23-21 possible?

The final set was not played like a tie-breaker.

Bleh. That match was SO long!!! 6 hours and 9 minutes!!!

Anyway, in Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon, There is not tiebreaker in the third set for women, and fifth set for men. Basically, the deciding set. Because of that, they have to play until someone wins by 2 games. In this case, both teams were able to hold serve(expect for one time when Knowles/Nestor broke serve, but Aspelin/Perry were able to get the break back), until Nestor/Knowles finally broke serve again and won the match 23-21. That last set alone took 2 hours and 13 minutes. Crazy stuff.

In tennis, you always have to win by more than two games, or two points in tie breakers. So, if the points are 8-9, then its tied 9-9 you have to play until someone reaches 11 points. If it gets to be 9-10 then 10-10 you will have to play until 12 points and so on. You get it, water heater?

They don't play a tie breaker in the 5th set. They have to win by 2 games.

In the final set, there is no tie breaker. You have to win by at least 2 games. So apparently one player was unable to lead by 2 until they won their 23rd game.
