In high school it is called
valedictorian (graduated 1st) and
salutatorian (graduated 2nd)

in college you can graduate
*** laude (with distinction)
summa *** laude (with great distinction)
magna *** laude (with highest distinction)

i'm sorry yahoo is bleeping the c-u-m which means with in latin
the college gives this to you, you can't decide on it yourself.

how can you know or prove that you graduated second in your class at college? how do you know everyone else's gpa?
use the term the college gave to you.

If it's a continuing class, it's simply the 1st ranked or 2nd ranked student in that class, but if it's a graduating class, the highest rank is valedictorian and the second highest is salutatorian. However, those are only used once you've graduated, when you can say that were the valedictorian of the class of '06, etc.

The latin honors system that colleges uses is usually GPA-based, and multiple people can graduate in those categories; for example, a student with a 4.0 GPA will graduate magna *** laude, a student with a 3.8-3.99 GPA will graduate summa *** laude, and a student with a 3.6-3.79 GPA will graduate *** laude. However, the top student in a college graduating class is still the valedictorian.
