Simple way... run msconfig (from Start menu, click "run" then enter msconfig in the window) and de-select the items you do not want to run...

Better ways: Use tools like HIJACKTHIS or SPYBOT which offer more features as well...

Also: Windows Defender from Microsoft has similar features...

See reference page below for download info for referenced tools.

It depends on what programs you are talking about. If it goes into the startup tray on the right side, usually if you right click on the program and click on settings or preferences, there is an option for starting when windows starts that you can uncheck. Bet bet would be to open the programs you don't want to automatically start and look under those tabs for that information. Good Luck.

How to use MSCONFIG
Built into Windows 98, 98SE, ME, and XP ("but what about Windows 95, NT, or 2000?") is a special tool called the "Microsoft System Configuration Utility" or simply "MSCONFIG." Designed to help you troubleshoot problems with your computer, MSCONFIG can also be used to ensure that your computer boots faster and crashes less.

Most people know that the more programs you have running on your computer at once, the more likely it is that your computer will either run slowly or even crash. What most people don't know is that every time you boot your computer a whole mess of "hidden" programs load in the background. Some of these hidden programs are essential, but most aren't. Turning off some of these hidden programs can significantly increase your computer's performance and reliability.

it's a little trickier now days since msconfig is gone from xp. follow the link below and add the msconfig to the tools tab. read the instructions, I downloaded a copy of msconfig and installed it in my windows system directory, you just go to start and the run and type msconfig and hit enter the far tab on the right will allow you to select startup programs, if you do the patch below , I think you can still do the start run msconfig deal. be sure to reboot after installing update.

Click on "Start", then click on "Run", then type "msconfig" and click "OK".

This will bring up a program that allows you to configure the way your computer runs.

Click the "Startup" tag and select which programs you want to run, and deselect the programs you want to bypass.

There is a program called CCleaner, do a search for it. Install it and run, then click on the tools tab, select the option to edit your start ups. This makes it very easy to control programs starting when windows does.

Run msconfig and uncheck the programs you don't want to run under the Startup

Go to "start" "programs" "startup"...From there just delete the ones you don't want to launch on startup. It doesn't delete the program...just gets it out of startup.

Hope that helps.

Use a program to manage your startup programs (check download.com, there should be a few free ones.) Most of them should check your registry, startup folder, etc.

You click on Start.... Then Run.... Type in 'MSCONFIG'..... Then go to the last tab called startup, and unselect the stuff you don't want.
