it depends. They is just a term to mean anybody but yourself and the person you are talking to. Its just a 3rd person pronoun is all it is. However, if you are talking media and political terms, the reason we follow 'them' is because we are expected to and we will get labeled as a terrorist if we dont follow 'them.'

I speak out against 'them' so 'they' want me behind bars. Dont tell 'them' where I am ;)

bcuz "I" is less important then "they." some people care more about what "they" say and think then what the individual actually thinks. peer pressure is usually what it's called.
