I commend you that you even know about soil amendments. It really does depend on the turf you are going to grow or sod. I take it you have already had or performed a soil analysis test. You can give your soil to much of one thing and not enough of another. If not and you live in the US you are soooo in luck. Each county in the US has a county extension office. If you cant find the number in the white pages then email your states Department Of Agriculture and ask for it, of course tell them the county you live in. They will email you back the number. The folks at your local county extension office are scientist that have studied this stuff in college for years. They can tell you how to obtain the samples from the area in question and then you bring them the soil (usually you take at least 12 samples from the whole yard and mix them in a bucket - then fill up a ziplock sandwhich bag and take it to the folks) this test on average cost 4 to 8 dollars and will tell you EXACTLY how much to add. Then for your geographical zone and for the plant you have chosen - I take it is turf but if it is not they can help with that as well - they can tell you how deep to till. REMEMBER WHEN TILLING - always, always, always, call up your local utilities and give them at least 3 business days to come out and label where any underground utilities are. IT CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE AND AT LEAST YOUR WALLET.

yard grass bermuda and other varieties are shallow roots only a few inches , however fescue and some rye are a little deeper but the main thing with tilling up the soil is make sure the grass is not seeding if it is and you till it up you will have only helped it to come back thicker than ever, if you have a bagger lawn mower cut grass very short and cut it slow to get all grass and seed
put clippings in bags or trash can where wind cant dispurse seed again then till and rake out all debree you will be fine

Look up your predominant grass that you have growing. All grasses have very deep roots, especially prairie type grasses that can go as deep as l2 feet.
