In the next day or two, I will be going to my college's freshman orientation. The size of the college is bigger than the town I live in! I don't know anyone else going to the orientation session that I am, and I was hoping for a few pointers on meeting people? Usually, I'm a pretty good people person, but sometimes when I don't know anyone, it's a little harder. I need something that will really work - not the cheesey "Nice shoes, wanna be friends?" Thanks so much!

Try mingling with people in your dorm when you move in. Look for other people who look like they dont know anyone. When I went away to college I didnt know anyone either and it was very intimidating. I realized later that there were lots of others in the same situation. You might also want to look into joining a sorority, even if you just go to the rush events its a great way to meet people.

Everyone goes through the same situation. Don't be intimidated.

If you're walking around campus with a map, everyone can see you're a freshman. If you want to start a conversation, just ask them for directions to ___ building.

Personally, I found the frats and sororities more interested in getting drunk and getting laid than anything else.

Walk around with a sign clipped to you that says, "Lonely lost girl. Be my friend."

Or, "TALK TO ME GODDAMNIT!"

Seriously though. Scope out a couple people you think are interesting and try to get near them. During the orientation, say something like, "Wow, isn't so-and-so's tie ugly?" or, "I can't believe how massive this college is...."

There will be people exactly like you there.
