I read that in history, the cheiftans would "marry" the local goddess when assuming the crown?

Does this still happen anywhere?

You are correct with your history. I am not aware of this happening in modern times anywhere today.

It is true, I'm pretty sure the local goddess would be represented by a village woman, identification hidden, and they would make love. A sexual rite.

i believe in celtic history this was fairly common. it gave the king status in a matriarchal society. she actually held the power. today, not so many goddesses in flesh around.
