Secondary ignition, (plug wires, caps) would be the first thing to check, then the other stuff. Good luck!

I had this problem with a 1981 318. The spark plugs were recently replaced and the spark plug wire caps were loose. Also, the 318 is "cold natured" so don't give it gas when you first start it. You also might try checking your automatic choke on the carburetor to see if its allowing the butterfly valve to move freely. Good luck. RJ

The choke advance is having a problems. It may be a sticky linkage that's causing the problem. Try making sure the choke advance is plugged in or that there is no damaged wire. If you find no bad wires than spray all the linkage with WD-40 and manually move the linkage. That should be the problem.

Check the cold start valve.
