Traverse City has wonderful lakeshore walking and decent downtown shopping and pretty decent food choices. The only problem is, this time of year it is overrun by tourists.
If you are looking to camp Tahquamenon Falls are just beautiful. They also make a wonderful day trip if you are staying in the upper peninsula.
If golfing is your thing Gaylord is the place to go. They are the "golf mecca" of the northern lower peninsula.
If you like to gamble or really just don't want to do much but get away Petoskey may be a good choice.

The Upper Penninsula is beautiful - Lake of the Clouds area. Also, Mackinaw Island is nice to visit and there are some neat B&B's around there. My parents stayed in one that was an old lighthouse. For a quick weekend, I'd recommend Traverse City. Here is a website that may help you out. http://www.michigan.org/travel/locations/?m=0 Around Christmastime, Frankenmuth is a wonderful place to visit.

Mackinac Island would be my first choice.
Or, go all the way up to the UP and check out the Pictured Rocks National Seashore. They do boat tours out of Munising, MI. Not as much going on there as Mackinac, but it's definitely pretty scenery.

i'd advise the UP... yet in case you in straightforward words have a weekend, it really is too some distance a stress. next fashionable is renting a cabin on lake Michigan or Lake Huron. There are tremendous places all alongside North23 alongside the shore of lake Huron. This time of year is appealing up there!! call Oscoda in case you desire a condominium...or merely bypass and locate one once you get there, there is continually a superb position accessible. Plus, Oscoda has the Huron wooded area, the Ausable River, and the seashores. Ahhhh. imagine i am going to upward thrust up there myself!!

Sault Ste Marie.. It's right on the Canadian border, a bit of a drive but relaxing.
