I ask because I may be hired soon to teach basic composition at a public college. It seems only Ph.D.'s can teach literature, and I have an MA in English-Creative Writing. If I did want to teach literature as well as creative writing--and I'm not sure that I do want to teach literature--would I need a doctorate?

You can absolutely get a doctorate in creative writing. One such program is at the University of Denver. Just do some creative searching at your local university library in the resources available on Ph.D. programs (ask the librarian where to find these resources), and then ask questions of the programs that look interesting. That way, you'll find one that will fit your needs. As for teaching literature, by engaging in creative writing, you are creating literature. Literature can be the doorway for someone else to explore the world of creative writing. Good luck!

I think an MFA is the highest you can go without going for a Doctorate in English.

In the arts an MFA is "equal" to the Doctorate in terms of teaching standards. The hiring college would look to see if you have the MFA or are looking to get it within a certain amount of years.

I know all the theater professors at my university had MFA's because there are no doctorate's in the Theater Arts.

But keep looking around you may find something out there that can combine what you want to do.

There are PhD programs that correspond to MFA degrees in creative writing, but they usually include a mix of literature and composition (for example, a PhD is rhetoric and composition). This type of PhD is well suited for teaching both composition/writing classes and literature classes. As far as an MFA being equal to a PhD...it's not. A PhD is always a post-master's degree, and the pay-scales and opportunities are usually better for those who have PhD's. PhD recipients also have more pull as far as choosing which classes they want to teach, etc.
